Spring is in the air: fresh flowers, warmer weather and brooms and dustpans. While you’re busy with physical cleaning, take a look at SMB spring cleaning. That’s right; it might be time to look at your business’s marketing and technology stacks, tossing out what doesn’t work and polishing up what does.
SMB spring cleaning for marketing
How are those old marketing campaigns doing? According to John Swanciger, CEO of Manta, it’s important to review long-standing marketing campaigns – and consider introducing new ones. Spring is logically a time of new ideas and renewal, and now is the time to introduce new products, services or promotions, as well as update old ones, he noted.
Additionally, now is also a good time to review mailing lists, especially email marketing lists, and loyalty programs. Make sure you have the correct contact information for customers, and update or delete any old addresses so that your customers receive the latest promotions and information from you, Swanciger said.
Polish up your SMB website and web presence
Be honest: when was the last time you refreshed your SMB website? Part of SMB spring cleaning is taking a look at your site and do a refresh, according to Swanciger. You may not need a complete overhaul, but check to make sure your contact information, product and service lineup, and hours of operation are correct. If you’re still using the same photos as you did in 1999, hire a photographer to take some new ones. If you haven’t redesigned your site since animated GIFs were the next big thing, it’s time to hire a designer. Claim your small business profile on sites like Manta, Yelp and Google. Get your business verified on Facebook. Finally, if you haven’t responded to reviews, positive and negative, do so now, Swanciger said.
Cut the SMB technology clutter
Cutting technology clutter is more than deleting unused apps on your phone (although that’s a good idea, too). Swanciger suggests reviewing email inboxes, to do lists and even spam folders and winnowing them down, as well as upgrading outdated software. Set up email folders and follow ups so you don’t miss any leads, he added.
